The U-turners
Awalnya dari salah satu stasiun radio yang menyebut pendengarnya U-lovers, Motioners, lalu saya jadi teringat sebutan putih-abu2ers buat anak SMU. Di tikungan putar balik, pikiran saya beralih ke seorang anak muda (laki2) yang mengayun2kan tangannya seperti polantas. Aha! Ada U-turner di sini! Begitu melihat saya menyalakan lampu belok (turning signal), dia langsung berusaha mengakomodasi niat saya itu dan berusaha menyetop kendaraan dari arah yang berlawanan (dengan berdiri di tengah jalan), supaya saya bisa putar balik. Sebuah truk melambat dan akhirnya berhenti di depannya, saya pun maju. Usahanya saya hargai dengan memberikan koin 500an yg sengaja saya sediakan di mobil untuk orang2 seperti ini.
Pengatur lalu-lintas tidak resmi ini banyak bertebaran di mana2. Tidak hanya di tikungan putar balik, tapi juga di persimpangan, terowongan, dan parkiran liar. Kehadiran mereka kadang membantu, kadang menyusahkan, tergantung niat dan efisiensi mereka bekerja. Kadang ada yg dengan serius dan berupaya sistematis melancarkan lalu lintas. Jika kebetulan tidak diberi uang, lambaian tangan sopir akan dibalas dengan anggukan dan tangan terangkat ramah. Tapi ada juga yang malah bikin macet, terutama jika para pengatur tidak kompak dengan satu sama lain.
Pada intinya mereka mencari kesempatan memperoleh sedikit uang di tengah kerumitan belantara lalu lintas kota2 besar di Indonesia, di mana budaya mengalah sudah jarang dipraktekkan oleh pengemudi kendaraan bermotor. Yang ada adalah budaya nyodok. Untuk pengemudi penakut seperti saya, biasanya saya harus menunggu cukup lama di persimpangan sampai ada pengemudi yang cukup ramah dan mau memberi jalan. Pernah saya menerapkan teori: jika kita bersikap ramah pada pengemudi lain (dengan membuka jendela, melambaikan tangan dan tersenyum), pengemudi lain jg akan mau mengalah untuk kita. Entah ini sekedar teori tinggal teori, atau memang senyum saya lebih mengarah ke marah daripada ramah, usaha saya tebar pesona tidak membuahkan hasil, kecuali dibalas senyuman dan kedipan dari sopir truk yang terus maju tanpa memberi jalan.
Maka bersyukur juga saya dengan adanya para pengatur lalu lintas tak resmi ini. Dengan sedikit koordinasi tangan, mata dan kaki, bisalah saya berputar balik sambil menyerahkan gopean atau seribuan ke tangannya sebelum saya melaju.
Kalau para pengemudi kita semua tiba2 berubah santun dan patuh pada peraturan lalu lintas, tentunya anak2 ini tidak akan perlu berada di jalan. Mereka tidak perlu menghirup debu dan asap knalpot di bawah terik matahari demi sejumlah uang yang mungkin tak bertahan lama di saku mereka. Kalau para pengemudi kita santun dan patuh peraturan lalu lintas, anak2 ini tidak di jalan, bukan hanya karena tidak ada kerjaan di jalan, tapi karena mereka mungkin akan sibuk melakukan hal2 lain yang lebih positif, bermanfaat, dan tidak membahayakan kesehatan mereka. Mungkin pada sekolah, mungkin pada punya pekerjaan yang lebih baik. Karena saya pikir perilaku kita di jalan tentunya tidak jauh beda dengan perilaku kita sehari2. Sejauh mana kita menghormati peraturan?
Yah, mungkin kalau hari ini ketemu dengan para U-turners ini, mari kita panjatkan sepotong doa buat mereka, atau setidaknya harapan positif buat mereka. Entah bagaimana, mudah2an suatu hari mereka2 ini punya kehidupan yang lebih baik.
