Black Friday adalah hari setelah thanksgiving di Amerika Serikat, yang mengartikan telah masuknya musim belanja untuk natal. Seperti kita ketahui, thanks giving jatuh pada hari kamis ke empat pada bulan November dan black Friday jatuh pada hari jum’at setelah thanksgiving. Black Friday bukan hari libur resmi, tetapi banyak orang yang mengambil cuti untuk memulai belanja natal di hari jum’at tersebut. Para pemilik took biasanya telah mendekorasi took mereka dengan suasana natal sebelum thanksgiving, dan di hari black Friday ini mereka buka jauh lebih awal yaitu pada pukul 5 pagi, dan menawarkan diskon besar-besaran dan hadiah yang ditujukan untuk menarik pelanggan agar belanja di took mereka.
Ada beberapa orang yang berpendapat, dinamakan Black Friday karena lalu lintas yang begitu padat dan toko-toko dipenuhi orang yang ingin berbelanja pada hari tersebut.
Tetapi pada dunia stock & futures market, dinamakan Black Friday karena retailers melakukan sell-off dan mendapatkan keuntungan besar-besaran pada hari tersebut. Karena Black disama artikan dengan keuntungan
