Email yang datang sore ini sungguh mengejutkanku. Bagaimana tidak, ternyata ia menganggap serius semua yang kami bahas kemarin malam. Dalam pertemuan yang singkat itu tidak terlalu banyak yang kami bahas. Aku hanya bercerita padanya kalau mungkin aku akan mulai menulis essay seputar konflik internasional. Aku menemukan kembali passion untuk menulis terutama setelah menyadari bahwa keadaan demokrasi di Afghanistan tidak jauh berbeda dengan demokrasi di Indonesia pasca reformasi.
Ia hanya mengangguk saja dan tidak banyak bicara. Sorot matanya tajam seakan ia tahu betul apa yang ada di pikiranku. Pun ketika akhirnya waktu pertemuan kami habis ia tidak berkata apa-apa. Ia hanya tersenyum sambil mempersilakanku keluar ruangan.
Rasanya pertemuan itu begitu hambar. Aku lanjutkan membaca artikel yang dikirimnya.
A government-appointed commission in Afghanistan has ordered a run-off vote to decide the country’s divisive presidential election. But as two experts told DW, it won’t be easy to resolve the battle for power. Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) ruled on Tuesday that incumbent President Hamid Karzai and his closest rival, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, should face off directly against one another in a second vote on Nov. 7.
In the first round of voting this August, which featured dozens of candidates, Karzai initially got 54 percent of the ballots. But that election was marred by fraud – with the UN-run Electoral Complaints Commision saying that up to 90 percent of ballots cast at some polling stations shouldn’t have counted.
Karzai and Adbullah have both said they welcome the IEC’s ruling, while world leaders, including US President Barack Obama and UN Sercretary General Ban Ki Moon, also hailed the decision to hold second vote.
The German Foreign Ministry said Berlin was pleased that a way forward had been found.
“It is important for all those involved to show responsibility, calm and moderation during the current situation and ensure there is a credible continuation of the electoral process,” the ministry said in an official statement.
But Afghans living in Germany are skeptical about how credible any election results can be.*)
Demokrasi di Indonesia baru bisa dikatakan berjalan pasca reformasi. Semua bidang dan sendi-sendi kehidupan mulai mengenal apa itu namanya demokrasi. Asalkan ada demokrasinya pasti laku. Kebebasan media dianggap sebagai penyebar virus buatan kaum intelektual Barat itu.
Kalau dihitung, Indonesia sudah menjalankan demokrasi yang betulan ini 11 tahun lamanya. Tidak jauh berbeda dengan Afghanistan. Afghanistan mulai melek demokrasi semenjak menjadi pesakitan koboi bernama George W. Bush yang menjadikan tanah Mujahidin sebagai ladang pembantaian massal atas nama perang terhadap terorisme pada 2001. Dengan dalih mencari biang kerok teroris pengebom WTC, Osama bin Laden, penghancuran massal pun dilakukan.
Selain upaya untuk menangkap dalang teroris rupanya imperialis modern tidak lagi menggunakan gold, gospel, dan glory dalam melaksanakan misinya. Sudah tentu, demokrasi kini menjadi bawaan wajib. Keadaan itu telah menguras otak penduduk Afghanistan. Mereka yang dulunya konservatif dibawah pimpinan rezim Taliban telah membuka matanya bahwa Taliban pun bisa diruntuhkan.
Invasi yang dilancarkan AS ternyata membuahkan hasil yang sepadan. Rakyat Afghanistan mulai terbuka terhadap virus yang sengaja mereka sebarkan. Buktinya, Hamid Karzai, terpilih sebagai presiden pada tahun 2004. Terpilihnya Hamid pun bukan tanpa kontroversi karena ia lebih dianggap sebagai boneka titipan asing. Sebagaimana yang sedang terjadi di Indonesia. Penunjukkan Endang Rahayu sebagai Menteri Kesehatan pun dinilai sebagai titipan asing alias AS.
8 tahun sudah demokrasi dilangsungkan di Afghanistan. Namun, belum ada perubahan yang signifikan dalam tata kehidupan bernegara masyarakat Afghanistan. Konflik horizontal antar etnis masih berlangsung. Taliban juga masih menjadi momok yang menakutkan bagi pasukan pendudukan yang bertugas di Afghanistan.
Rupanya, Hamid Karzai tidak bisa menyatukan seluruh masyarakat Afghanistan. Karzai kurang bisa menyatu dan menyublim dalam hati masyarakat yang dipimpinnya. Sempat beredar dugaan bahwa kemenangannya di Pemilu kemarin itu hanyalah omong kosong yang dikarangnya sendiri. Untung dia masih sedikit legowo untuk menerima keputusan KPU-nya Afghanistan untuk melaksanakan pemilu ulang.
Hamid Karzai tentu masih dibayangi kekhawatiran mengenai kekalahannya. Karzai tidak bisa menghindari fakta bahwa bila seandainya bila pemilu yang terlanjur dibatalkan hasilnya kemarin itu bisa jadi klimaks dari karir politiknya. Bila pemilu kemarin berlangsung secara jujur dan terbuka, menurut analis-analis Afghanistan di Jerman sana tidak akan mencapai 10%. Itu artinya ia akan kalah maka ia segera lakukan tindakan preventif dengan penggelembungan suara.
Agaknya, Afghanistan mesti belajar banyak dari Indonesia tentang bagaimana mengelola demokrasi terutama dalam mempertahan kekuasaan melalui cara yang demokratis. Cara-cara yang digunakan dalam pemilu di Indonesia pun masih punya banyak celah untuk dilanggar. Ini adalah masalah demokrasi di negara-negara berkembang.

Aku baca kembali email darinya yang entah untuk keberapa kalinya. Aku berhenti pada kalimat terakhir. Aku baru menyadarinya kalau ada sesuatu yang aneh disitu. Aku menahan nafas sejenak. Mengucek mata barangkali ada yang salah dengan mataku. Namun, semuanya semakin jelas. Aku belum sampai membaca kembali tulisanku. Aku masih terhenti pada email darinya Aku menatap pesannya semakin dalam. Mencari arti dalam cinta yang ia titipkan dalam potongan artikel itu.
